Both learn from each other and a wide array of characters from various mythologies and religions. Arro must learn to stand up to his masters while vowing to protect his new friend. With an army of angels of death on their trail, Arro disobeys orders from the Fates, and seeks guidance from other outcasts from mythologies around the world. (Taken from Amazon.com)

Preface

Since the beginning of time I have known one thing. Death. Death is all that defines my kind. The torture of this knowledge runs deep within my veins. We were created for that one morbid purpose. We have always been here, lurking in the shadows. Every creature’s biggest fear. We have gone by many names: reapers, death bringers, angels of death. Every culture knows and fears us. Gods and religions have come and gone, but we remain, ever vigilant of our duties. We serve death, culling the flock when called upon. To say one does not fear death is a lie, a lie almost as dreadful as myself. I lie here in the darkness awaiting the next calling. Waiting, thinking, yearning for release.  The darkness bites at me like a winter frost. My limbs are numb. I do not know how much time has passed since I was last released into the night. Days…months…years. I hear the writhing and growling of the others, restless as I am with this torturous existence. This cold, dark hell in which we were born unto.

I can feel it in my bones. The rage in me grows little by little. Release will come soon, and I will perform my duty with deadly precision. The gathering of the souls will commence. The ones chosen by our masters will be brought to their knees, their souls harvested. Such is the way of life. Life for all mortals. A life in which I would give anything for. Release from this torture. I crave it. I am unlike many of the others who have embraced this cold existence, reveling in the culling. The path they walk has delved them into a maddening bloodlust. They create unique and disastrous ways to kill, relishing each soul as a trophy. Our kind has fallen from grace over the years. We were once proud, understanding of our role. We are a dark necessity on an otherwise bright world. How far we have fallen.

The cold night air calls to me. My whole body shudders in anticipation. The shadows surrounding my body writhe in the darkness. I need to stretch my wings. As my vision turns from black to red, I lick my lips in anticipation. I do not take joy in killing. Not yet anyway. That is a darkness I hope to never experience. I do what I must, as it is the way of things. The hunt and kill is the price I must pay for one night, one night of freedom. Soon enough, I will stretch my wings and soar under the moon. The bite of the cold night air against my skin is invigorating. I will collect my souls and return to the void where I make my home. Waiting. Thinking. Hoping. One day. One day I will step into the light. This is my existence and that small shred of hope is all that I possess.

The time for dreams is done now. I will spread my wings and join the night sky. I will hunt my targets and fulfill their destiny. These unfortunate souls have completed their journeys on this world, and I must keep the story moving. The call is placed. Their voices fill my head, echoing throughout my skull. It is time.

I should have read the book description, dammit.  Okay, so I usually don’t really read the synopsis of books I’m going to review, and if I do I skim it really fast because I like to be surprised.  Well, in skimming this one, I thought that it was going to be legit letters to the president.  I probably should have put more thought into that though, huh.  Obama is still in office, so they obviously wouldn’t release letters that new.  I’ve been really busy, and I’m really not a complete idiot; you see, a few years back I bought my father in law this book that did have legit letters to past presidents.  (Called Dear Mr. President: Letters to the Oval Office from the Files of the National Archives).

So, that’s what I thought I was getting anyways, except to President Obama.  Well, it wasn’t.

Obama Confidential: Strange, Odd & Bizarre Letters to the 44th President are all completely fake letters.  Make believe.  Not real.  It’s supposed to be a work of satire and on the cover it says, “Laugh out loud funny!”  said A. Lincoln.  (Catch that name?)  Well, I did not laugh out loud, not even crack a smile.

This book just wasn’t for me; I actually stopped halfway through because I just did not enjoy it at all.  I was so bored.  The only time I want to read fake correspondence would be through fictional characters of a good fictional book.  Random made up letters to President Obama just don’t do anything for me.

Sorry Mr. Marc Berlin, I know a massive amount of work must go into writing and creating a book, and I should have paid attention to what I was getting into.  But all in all, I wouldn’t recommend.

Mercy’s having a bad day.  She gets in a car accident with her stepdaughter while shopping on Black Friday.  Then she can’t get in touch with her husband, Adam, or anyone else in the pack.  Turns out the whole pack has been kidnapped.  It’s up to Mercy to keep Adam’s daughter safe, and find out who is behind the kidnapping without getting hurt or kidnapped herself.

This is one of my favorite series, and the only reason I waited months to read it was because I’ve been so busy.    Patricia Briggs doesn’t disappoint in this book.  Even though it had been a while since the last book in the series, I felt like I knew the characters immediately.

I don’t have too much to say about this book, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.  This is one of my go to series.  The main character, Mercy, is a mechanic, and one of a kind.  If you enjoy werewolves, fae, and vampires, but not in a corny way, pick up the first in the series, Moon Called, and give it a try.

Alpha Gene Review

Title:  Alpha Gene

Imagine being able to lift a car, move objects with your mind, and become invisible at a moment’s notice.  Doctor Lucas McKenna had been researching a gene that would make this possible for years.  He was just about to make a presentation on this gene when his research partner is murdered, and Dr. McKenna is to blame.  He is found not guilty and relocates to a small town, where the alpha gene that he had researched and imagined for so long is shown to him through children, right before his very eyes.  These almost teenagers feel alone with their powers, but Dr. McKenna takes them in under his wing, and helps them learn to control their abilities.  And with each other these kids find confidence, fight bullies, and learn to accept themselves.

The story starts out with Dr. McKenna as the main character, and it’s told through his point of view.  But then it shifts to the children’s stories, mostly Peter.  I think it would have been helpful if it then switched to Peter’s point of view instead of third character because I always felt that first person pov made the story more ‘real’ if you will.

One other thing that would make me stop the story in my tracks was all the spelling and grammar mistakes.  Some words are spelled right, but just in the wrong form, for instance, “Go take a sit, kid, any seat,” (p. 58).

And then, there was the constant age change.

For young Peter, the road trip had been torture.  A twelve-year-old kid, confined to the back seat of a car for six hours, that’s almost like prison time.  Peter was a smart kid, not grades smart but street smart.  The ten year old was kind of tall for his age, had black hair, and sported a few freckle here and there. (pgs.49- 50)

See what I’m saying?  I had to not think about their age and just assumed they were somewhere in between 10-12 years old.

One last bothersome thing was the fish, Merlin.  Peter was still getting used to his powers, and Merlin the fish ended up on the floor.  Peter’s mom came up when she heard the ruckus and “by the time she pulled it out of the back of the desk, the poor little creature was breathing no more.” (p. 124).  Of course it wasn’t breathing, it’s a fish!  They breathe in water.  Yes, maybe the fish was dead from suffocation or from the force of being thrown out of an exploding fish tank, but we don’t know for sure because they didn’t try to put it back in water.  (I’m just saying, cause my fish once jumped out of the tank before I knew to put a cover on top.  When my husband found it we thought it was dead, but we put it in the water and it lived another year!)

Okay, on to the positives.  It was a good story!  This is Mr. Huerta’s first book, and I think he did an amazing job.  If it wasn’t for the grammar errors, the age change, and point of view issues, I probably would have rated it higher than I did.  But for what it’s worth 3 ½ stars is still a good rating.
